The vet’s reaction
“Yes, all five of them. They’ve been here for a few weeks, and we were thinking of keeping one or two, then putting the others up for adoption,” John explained before being abruptly interrupted by Dr. Nichols. “John, I’m sorry, but you can’t do that,” the vet declared gravely. Disconcerted by this unexpected reaction, John looked at him, eyebrows furrowed. “Excuse me?” he asked, unable to understand what was causing such concern.

“Yes, you heard right, John. You can’t put these kittens up for adoption. You don’t realize what they are,” the vet replied gravely. Bewildered, John looked down at the little fur balls before repeating, perplexed: “What are they? They’re just kittens abandoned by their mother!” He looked up, searching for an explanation. “Don’t you want to help them?” he added, not suspecting for a moment the real reason for the vet’s concern.
