Are you one of those who believe that they were supposed to be born in a different era? Personally, with its amazing music and incredible sense of fashion, I would have loved to have been alive during the ’60s. Scoring a Woodstock ticket in 1969 would also have been incredible. Although five decades have passed since the Woodstock era ended, we can not deny that its legacy lives on. Take a look at these images that will make you wish back then that you were around. The festival served as a cultural landmark that really captured in those days the free-spirited nature and sense of freedom that the youth embodied.
You would have seen people resting in strange positions and places if you were lucky enough to attend the festival. It was a completely outdoor festival, meaning that for its duration, attendees camped out. Take a look at this guy who has found the perfect spot between these two cars to doze off. While it doesn’t seem to be the safest place to rest, it did not seem to mind the cowboy! He probably didn’t think the car would go anywhere, so what else to do but relax and take it easy?
The Challenge Of Getting There
First things first: transportation, of course. You would have to join tens of thousands of other people who flocked to Bethel, New York, to get into the event. The roads appeared to be parking lots! It is not surprising to hear that individuals have decided to just go on foot. The roads eventually closed down, which meant that some people did not even reach the road leading to the festival.
The Legendary Jimi Hendrix
Festivalgoers had to wait three whole days before Jimi Hendrix finally came on stage. His rendition of the Star-Spangled Banner has undoubtedly become so legendary that many associate it with the festival. The band he performed with at Woodstock was a temporary crew. Before the festival, the usual band broke up, so he needed to find people immediately.
Janis Joplin Stayed
Janis Joplin was at Woodstock as well. For her set, she received $7,500! Most people remember her appearance because of her “Piece of My Heart” performance. Aside from this, during the second day, she also belted out several other songs. The entire band was flown via helicopter into the venue. The other members remember how she told them to play any other gig like it was. She stuck around at Woodstock when the show ended to enjoy the rest of the festival with the festivalgoers!
A Surprise John Sebastian Set
The Woodstock performance by John Sebastian was not actually scheduled, but it was still unforgettable. He watched the festival but agreed when he was asked to perform as an acoustic guitar player by the organizers. Overall, on top of two others, he played three unreleased songs. And what an icon!
Bigger Than They Thought
In the beginning, the plan was to hold it in the summer arts colony called Woodstock, which was a favorite of many musicians. However, the first festival location was Wallkill, New York. When the locals found out how big it was going to be, they expressed objections to it. Despite the planning, they were not prepared for the 400,000 attendees that ended up coming. They only had 50,000 people in mind!
No Place For Discrimination
At Woodstock, discrimination had no place. Anyone, regardless of their race, gender, and age, could come. The parents took their children with them. This little one looked especially excited about being there! How cute is that? Not only did children attend the festival, but there were actually some babies born there and then. Amazing right?
Sri Swami Satchidananda’s Speech
The renowned spiritual master, Sri Swami Satchidananda, kickstarted the festival with an impressive speech. There were 400,000 people around to hear him talk about the energy and power of sound that the universe is governed by, he said. It was stronger than anything in the world, according to him.
The Place To Be
Some things that are representative of Woodstock are daisies, tie-dye clothes, and hippiedom, which many consider the major cultural event of the 1960s. It was simply the location to be. All the teenagers wanted to spend time, be free, and enjoy the amazing music with their friends and lovers. We have to admit that today the prospect sounds just as attractive as it did then!
Buses And Caravans Aplenty
There were caravans and abandoned buses scattered across the festival grounds. This served as the ideal escape from reality or the opportunity to enjoy a little privacy! As the area was filled with so many people, you can be sure that having a vehicle was an amazing thing to have as you have a place all to yourself.
There were also makeshift stores selling crafts, clothes, and paraphernalia for drugs. The aural and visual fest that Woodstock had to offer was only boosted. At music concerts and festivals, these are still common sights, of course. Several people left with tie-dye shirts on their backs during the festival itself! They had nothing to worry about when people came without a change of clothes.
Odd Sleeping Arrangements
It is only natural for the attendees to get tired now and then, with all the people, music, and psychedelic drugs at their disposal. If all the hoods are taken from the car, how about a motorcycle? The odd sleeping spots would be another iconic Woodstock experience!
Choose Your Own Adventure
Both “Gentle Path High Way” and “Groovy Way” sound appealing if you ask us. The latter makes us think of afros and bell-bottom jeans, while the former brings to mind images of the green countryside. Isn’t it awesome to think that the “Groovy Way” was possible for attendees to explore? We have to admit; we are a bit jealous.
The Birth Of Jam Sessions
Many people consider the festival to be the birthplace of what we now know as the American drum circle. This applies to a group of individuals coming together to play music together. “Perhaps as a “jam session,” you know it better. Everybody was influenced by the music being played to create their own music and make instruments with whatever they had. The attendees were jammed with friends and strangers alike. Joining in on the fun and making amazing music together was easy!
Setting Up The Sound System
The person in charge of sound engineering at Woodstock was Bill Hanley. The event was very successful, according to him. He developed custom columns of speakers and placed arrays on the high towers. The arrangement was only intended to entertain 150,000 individuals. The crowd that came was, as we already know, much larger than they had originally anticipated. The sound system was nonetheless perfect.
A Truly Unique Experience
Whenever you hear what it was like to go to Woodstock, don’t you feel a tinge of jealousy? We are certain that all the participants consider it a special moment in their lives. What we’d give to see all the people wearing colorful clothes, bead necklaces, and love celebration!
Fun In The Sun
Like previously mentioned, many parents brought their little ones along. Aside from the music, they had a blast feeling the sun on their skin! Just look at these people, you can be certain that they were having the time of their lives as they listen to their favorite musicians play on stage!
Families Celebrating Peace, Love, Music
This father is probably the coolest parent anybody has ever had! We bet you’ve never been brought to music festivals by your father or let you hop on psychedelic school buses. In the meantime, the family decided it was time to break from the activities and enjoy a picnic. Look at them resting on the sleeping bags on this grassy field and chugging 7 up.
Latin Rock At Woodstock
Carlos Santana, together with his band, brought Latin Rock to the festival. The audience members adored them. During an interview with Rolling Stone, he said, “So I said, ‘Hey, I think I’ll take some psychedelics, and by the time I’m coming down, it’ll be time to go on stage, and I’ll feel fine.’ But when I was peaking around two o’clock, somebody said, ‘If you don’t go right now, you’re not gonna go on.’”
Love Makes The World Go ‘Round
At Woodstock, sharing was another big thing, which made sense considering the values it upheld. Since there was not enough to go around, everyone shared their food. There were far too many people, leading to a shortage of food. The fact that people were celebrating love was a good thing! Many volunteered on the festival grounds to feed everyone.
More Amazing Performances
There were many musical acts over the course of those three days. Creedence Clearwater Revival and The Who were among those who performed! Although there are many other great festivals that you can attend, do you think that there will be another festival that can top or at least live up to the expectations Woodstock set? We doubt it.
Lending A Hand To Those In Need
As we said during the three-day event, love was in the air. People did not hesitate when needed to help each other out. This sense of community, aside from the music, separates Woodstock from any music festival before and after it.
Atop The Roof Of The Vans
Aside from being the stylish way to get around the venue, psychedelic vans were perfect for events like this one. They were not only comfortable, but they also provided a great way to see what was going on stage. Of course, while they waited for the next musical act, individuals could choose to sleep inside the van. It sounds more attractive than a motorcycle or the hood of a car, we must say!
Usually, individuals are free to wear whatever they want to music festivals. Although most people at Woodstock chose the tie-dye look, some took the chance to stand out and send a message. Do you think that at the time, he was under the influence of drugs? Who knows what message this guy wants to say, even though we have to admit that his creativity and dedication impress us.
Hugs For All
A photographer snapped this photo as another morning was breaking out on the festival grounds. As they share a single blanket, it shows a couple locked in an embrace. They were far from being the only ones huddling during Woodstock for warmth! During the event, the sleeping arrangements were truly something else.
One For The History Books
On August 15, 1969, the Woodstock Music Festival began, as half a million people waited for the three-day music festival to begin on a dairy farm in Bethel, New York. “An Aquarian Experience: 3 Days of Peace and Music,” which would later be known simply as Woodstock and become synonymous with the 1960s counterculture movement.
It was truly an event that one will never forget. Of course, talented musicians like Janis Joplin, The Who, Santana, Jimmy Hendrix, and Joan Baez made it all the more special. Their performances will always be remembered as one of the best performances ever done in the world.
Although we would trade anything to listen to those performances, our favorite part of the festival might just be the moments of intimacy shared by the festivalgoers! There is no doubt that a lot of people have shared extraordinary moments during Woodstock.
Time For Chow
Although most people look back at Woodstock and realize they need to improve, their sense of fashion, how inclusive and communal the concert was was the biggest takeaway we got. The 400,000 people in attendance had to eat, and so they did! (with lots of assistance)
Come Rain or Shine
No matter the weather, Woodstock was happening. If it happened to rain, then it rained! The event was rain or shine, so the people partied even when the heavens opened up and the storm came! This definitely did not hinder people from enjoying the event.
Why not take your friend’s car for a nap while you wait in line? It sounds like a wonderful idea for us! This was the next best thing for those that didn’t come with tents even though we must admit that it couldn’t have been very comfortable!
Yoga was a big hit during the 1960s and especially among the Woodstock attendees. Those who knew some poses held makeshift yoga seminars right in the middle of the event too. You can be sure that many people took the time to learn a bit about yoga there!
Welcome To The Club
Woodstock is renowned for the peaceful atmosphere and friendliness of the people who have come here. At an important time in U.S. history, they got together and became one. Can you believe that during the duration of the event, not one fight took place? Awesome!
Janis Joplin Of Course
Janis Joplin was definitely a talented lady. She was one of Woodstock’s headliners! She played until 2 AM on Saturday, the crowd’s hearts and souls in the palm of her hand the whole time. This was her biggest show since going solo.
I’m in the Band
Although there was an admission fee to enter, the organizers soon gave up when the masses and masses of people kept coming. The happy people were flooding the campgrounds, and the organizers knew there was no point in restricting the number of attendees.
Writing the Next Big Hit
On Day 3 at Woodstock, Tim Hardin performed, though his performance is rarely talked about. He is a lesser-known folk artist who had “If I Were a Carpenter” under his belt, only one big hit. Lucky for him, the fans were just as fond of it as they were on the radio!
The farmer who owned the land on which Woodstock took place, Max Yasgur, was moved to tears by the festival. He was famously quoted as saying, “If we join them, we can turn those adversities that are the problems of America today into a hope for a brighter and more peaceful future.” This guy saved Woodstock by allowing it to happen in the first place!
Helping One Another
The ‘flower child’ movement was opposed primarily to the war in Vietnam. Many people came to Woodstock to demonstrate solidarity and peace to oppose the terrible events that were happening. People here help each other to do henna tattoos during the festival, a popular body art.
Extra Extra Read All About It
Since the Internet didn’t exist back then, people got their news via newspapers and magazines. They wanted to keep up with the news while at the festival, which was how they did it! We are fortunate that we have the technology that we have right now!
As you know, styles always come back. The same can be said about the style during the ’60s. The outfits and hairstyles this couple is sporting could definitely be seen on the streets today. Their clothing truly came from a different era. Would you be rocking the same outfit as them?
Goth before Goth
Try to find someone dressed in all black during Woodstock. It’s pretty difficult! This picture is truly remarkable since this woman did the impossible and did what no other attendee did. You bet that she stood out from the rest of the crowd!
Melanie Sings ‘Candles in the Rain’
is an American singer-songwriter, usually professionally known as Melanie or as Melanie Safka. In this photo, Melanie Schekeryk performs “Lay Down (Candles in the Rain),” and it was quite the hit! Can you believe she is still performing today and has been since 1967?? This singer is unstoppable!
Fortune tellers were apparently a big deal during Woodstock. We’re not sure we would take advice from a hippie wearing that sort of trippy dress, but then again, it’s Woodstock. Anyone is free to do whatever they want. If they want to take advice from a fortune teller, then why not?
Fresh From the Farm
We’re not sure who brought the cow, where it came from, or why they’re milking it, but we do know one thing for sure. Everything goes when it comes to Woodstock, so this picture shouldn’t be too surprising! But the question remains, why would you even bring a cow in Woodstock?
We know 400,00 people (the number of people who attended Woodstock) is difficult to picture, so try to think about it like this. Some math whiz found out that if you line up blue jeans equal to the number of participants, you will end up with a fabric of 10 million yards!
Jimi Hendrix Sings
Over 30 iconic artists performed at Woodstock, but no one was as impressive as the one and only Jimi Hendrix. He fully embraced his ability to please everyone in the crowd, the power of the moment, and of course, the 60’s. Being one of the most influential guitarists of all-time, Jimi Hendrix is surely one of Woodstock’s most anticipated performers.
2017 or 1969?
Man, is this couple too cool! At a festival like Coachella, we could easily see them in 2019. Her Bohemian-style dress and her jean-cut shorts will never go out of style. Oh, and how can we forget about her bleached waves at the beach and her fabulous afro!
Rain Dance Man
When the rain started pouring down, the audience came together and performed a rain dance to halt the rain. They were obviously not as successful as it kept on coming, but it’s the thought that counts! But like we have previously mentioned, this did not let them from not enjoying the event.
Twist and Shout
Although the rain dance did not work, it always helped a friend dry his clothes! The only way to make things really nice and dry was the old trick… twist and yell! Oh, and we’re not talking about this coveted move to dance.
