The Colorado Springs Fire Department got a distress call about animals that were in need of rescuing. As usual, they went to the scene as fast as they could. Now, there was nothing unusual about puppy rescue operations. They thought that they had everything in order when they finished bringing out the puppies from the storm drain. However, things changed when they found out the truth about these animals!

Job Demands

When you think of firefighters, the first image that would come to mind would be a burning house. However, you should know that this is not the only thing that they do. They do not only help humans in distress, but also animals in need! Kittens are not the only animals that they help either.

Job Demands

Job Demands

Not Just Fires

Needless to say, the biggest part of their job would be to put out fires. However, there are other things that they are trained to help with. The responsibilities range from inspecting new buildings to providing medical care to handling hazardous materials. As you can see, we rely on them for many things.

Not Just Fires

Response Time

A lot of the jobs have something similar in common. They are all risky situations! This was the reason the Colorado Springs Fire Department has a huge team of responders all over the city. They want to ensure that they can send someone to an emergency as soon as possible. They can get to anywhere in the city within 8 minutes most of the time.

Response Time

Response Time

Equipment

It is possible for a fire to break out in many places at the same time. On top of that, every site might have a different sort of blaze. CSFD has an accumulation of various vehicles for different situations. There are 22 engine companies, 3 medical squads, 6 truck companies, 1 HeavyHazmat team, and 1 hazmat team. On top of that, they have 11 brush trucks to handle wildland fires, 1 hazardous-materials decontamination vehicle, 1 hose wagon, and 1 air supply truck.

Just A Normal Day

On that memorable day, things did not seem any different to the folks at the Colorado Springs Fire Department station. The day felt like any other day at the job. They conducted checkups, made coffee, filed reports, and inspected engines. However, this next job was going to make their day weird!

Just A Normal Day

A Call

It was a mundane day at the job until they got a call. Even then, it did not sound like anything unusual. After the dispatcher took the details, the information was relayed to the firemen in the station. The job was an animal rescue call, and it did not sound hard. This was what they thought at the very least.

Precautions

An experienced animal rescuer knows that you need to take various precautions regardless of how much you want to help. After all, animals tend to behave in odd ways when they feel endangered or scared. Even though some might simply cower in the corner out of fear, there are others that get aggressive. Some rescuers have been attacked by these creatures. The firefighters need to follow a set of rules to ensure both their safety and that of the animal.

Precautions

Precautions

Always Prepared

A fireman must be ready for just about anything when they respond to an animal rescue call. Cats and dogs are not the only creatures that they rescue. Aside from that, they can also be called in to deal with undomesticated ones such as chickens, bears, and even wild cats.

Always Prepared

Always Prepared

No Worries

On that particular day, it did not sound like they had a lot of things to worry about. After all, there was nothing scary about rescuing a litter of pups. The team put on their gear, hopped on the truck, and drove to the location of the canines.

Assessment

They got there in no time at all. Right away, they hopped off the firetruck and inspected the situation. It looked like the puppies were all trapped below a storm grate. At first glance, it did not look like it was going to be a complicated scenario. If ever rain fell, however, it was possible that the pups might drown.

The Clock Is Ticking

They took a couple of minutes to devise a plan. They assessed the situation in front of them, and the firemen also drew a couple of conclusions. It did not matter if the rain did not fall because the poor puppies were still in danger of freezing in the cold.

Quick Thinking

The firemen knew that these animals must have been very tiny. There was no way that they could get out of the sewer without help. The good news was that the sewer was not that deep. The team talked about the options that they had. In the end, they agreed that one or two people can fetch the pups.

Quick Thinking

Quick Thinking

First Look

The storm grate was a little heavy, so they had to take it out. That was how they were able to get a good look at the animals. It was the first time that they not only saw them but heard them as well. When they did so, they realized that these animals were very young.

First Look

No Home

The firemen could not figure out just how on earth they got there. They felt even more curious because the mother did not seem to be there. There were plenty of questions going through their head, but they first had to carry out this mission.

Abandoned

Even though they could not see the mother or father anywhere, it was important for them to act with caution. There are animals out there who will leave their babies when they come into contact with humans. Meanwhile, there are also parents who would get vicious when they defend their young. In this case, it looked like a case of abandonment.

Abandoned

A Difficult Situation

When the team was able to look at the pups, they could not believe that the animals survived for that long. After all, they saw that the sewer was full of garbage and dirt. Sunlight could not get all the way down there either, so this meant that it was also freezing cold. The things that they saw only made them feel more motivated to rescue the babies.

Delicate Situation

The pups were obviously in danger, so it was time for the firemen to get to them to safety. They would have no problem if the mother decided to abandon them for good. However, it was a different matter if she wanted to return. After all, she was going to be shocked if she did not see them down there.

Delicate Situation

Stressful Moments

It soon became clear to the rescue team that these were no ordinary puppies. The thought of it gave them chills. What sort of animal would return to the spot to look after her young? This was not an easy decision to make, but time was running out for the babies all the same.

Deciding

They knew what options they had, but it was hard to make the right call. They could just leave the pups there and hope that the mother would return soon. On the other hand, they could also get the babies out of there under the assumption that she would not return. At any rate, the pups were trapped.

Investigating

They still did not know for sure what animals these were. However, they ended up choosing to simply get them out of there. They decided that they were willing to risk “contaminating” the babies with their human touch. It was the best course of action for their own sake.

The Rescue

One of the precautions that the firemen took would be to put on gloves. This way, they could avoid leaving their scent on the fur of the animals. Once they extracted the babies from the sewer, they left them on a sheet that they prepared beside the hole.

It took the team a moment to notice that this was not just a regular puppy but a very young one! By then, they still had no idea how the little ones ended up in the sewer. However, they did not have a lot of time to think about it. They still had more puppies to save!

As the group worked, one of them suggested that the owner decided to abandon the puppies in the sewer. The truth is that it is not at all uncommon for folks to leave their puppies in dumpsters or by the road. Knowing this, it did not sound impossible that someone left the litter in the storm drain.

Even though it was a tragic thought, they knew that it was very much possible. Many people would do anything to get rid of responsibility, after all. Thinking about this only made the firemen feel encouraged to work faster and harder.

We hope that all the pet owners out there will learn a lesson from this. You might think that the “easy way out” would be to abandon your pets on the side of the road. Even though this is true for you, this is the exact opposite for the animal that you are leaving behind. The firemen hoped that the puppies were not left there by a human!

By then, the team decided to investigate further on what took place there. There was a witness who was willing to share whatever information she had. The woman told the firemen that she spotted the puppies as they were getting swept away by the storm.

Mark could not believe what he just heard. He pressed the phone to his ear, wondering if he heard incorrectly. Maybe there was a connection problem that was making the signal weird. However, the story did have a twist. The vet informed him that the mother was probably in the area. She might even be looking for the babies. It was suggested that they return the babies to the sewer so that they had a chance of being reunited with their mother.

Worth A Try

The firemen could not help but feel weird at the prospect of returning the cubs in the storm drain. After all, it felt like they were undoing what they did. However, they knew that it would be best if the cubs were reunited with their mother. This time, they were going to wait until it happened.

They finished putting the cubs back in the drain. The rescuers had been waiting patiently from the side. They did not want to spook the mother, so they kept their distance. The Red Fox

Red foxes have a reputation for being smart creatures. They like to spend the rest of the day in the dens and only come out when it is night. The plan did not turn out the way they were expecting, however. The mother did not return even as morning approached. They hoped that she would show up soon.

Dark And Cool

If foxes like to make dwelling places in dens, why would the mother of the litter put the cubs in a sewer grate? The experts have an answer to this question. The mother probably thought that the drain was similar to a den because it was cool and dark at the same time.

Dark And Cool

Mistake

The mother fox probably made a mistake by leaving the babies there as she picked a den. Even though the sewer was cold and dark, this did not automatically make it a good place to raise cubs! There should be more to it than these superficial similarities.

If you want to prevent encounters with wildlife, there are several things that you have to do. First of all, you must not feed these creatures even though they look very hungry. You should keep all your pet food indoors as well. Lastly, it is a good idea to fill holes that are larger than a quarter of an inch. You can use cement to prevent them from going inside your house.
