When it comes to houses that are not doing well on the market, you probably did not expect huge luxury mansions. Sadly, the following mega-mansions owners will show you that it is not only rundown houses that are difficult to sell! You are not going to believe that these gorgeous properties have no takers. There are various reasons for their inability to sell. Some of them have suffered from the reputation of the previous owners. On the other hand, the history of the house itself might also be a huge factor. It is also possible for the culprit to be overvaluation and high property taxes. At any rate, celebrities have a hard time finding the right buyer for the following unused properties!
Mel Gibson’s Home – Malibu, California
It is believed that Prince Harry is interested in the five-bed, five-bath French country home of Mel Gibson. However, it has remained unsold even a decade after the actor put it up for sale. In 2010, he put it on the market at an asking price of $14.5 million. He dropped it to $12.8 million the following year. By November 2011, he reduced it further to $11.8 million! After this, he took out the listing only to put it back up for the original asking price. In 2008, the actor bought it from David Duchovny and Tea Leoni. Gibson added personal touches to the ocean-view estate to highlights its Old World charms. There is a good chance that people are scrolling past it because of its high property taxes.
Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn’s Beach Mansion – Malibu, California
In our opinion, it is impressive that Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn have stayed together without getting married! The two have worked on movies like The Thing, Overboard, and Private Benjamin in the past. They also run a side hustle in the form of their Malibu beach house. The Balinese-inspired mansion is on Broad Beach and entered the market at $14.8 million in 2011. Around three decades before that, they rented it out for $95,000 a month. It was a lucrative property, but they are finding it hard to find a buyer. Built-in the ‘70s, the state has a flagstone courtyard that will lead you into a tropical-themed house with a chef’s kitchen and a huge chandelier in the foyer.
50 Cent’s Connecticut Mansion – Farmington, Connecticut
The rapper has not been lucky for the sale of his mansion for more than twelve years. He even reduced the asking price by 85 percent before buyers started to consider it seriously. His mansion is impressive, with 52 rooms. It has a nightclub, a recording studio, a hot tub, basketball courts, game rooms, and pools. In 2003, 50 Cent paid $4.1 million to take it off, Mike Tyson. Four years after that, he put it up for sale at $18.5 million! Realtor Dolly Lenz said that it was priced “too out of whack.” She went on to say that no luxury home has ever gone for “anywhere near that number” in the region.
Faith Hill and Tim McGraw’s Mansion – Tennessee
Tim McGraw and Faith Hill boast a net worth of $135 million between them. This makes them one of the wealthiest couples in the entertainment industry! They own a mansion in Leiper’s Fork, Tennessee. It is a huge mansion that measures 22,460 sq. ft. and boasts ten bathrooms and five bedrooms. The house rests on more than 750 acres of land and comes with a dozen-stall barn. They put it up for sale at $20 million in 2013. The couple has since reduced the price several times. It might help if you know what kind of town Leiper’s Fork is. There is not much to do in the area since it is a small unincorporated town populated by 650 folks. It has nothing going for it outside of a church, a distillery, and a restaurant.
Tommy Hilfiger’s Mansion – Greenwich, Connecticut
This is among the newest mega-mansions to be put up for sale. Tommy Hilfiger is now selling his mansion in Greenwich through Sotheby’s International. He is asking $47.5 million for it. It continues the recent trend of New Yorkers heading to rural states and destinations nearby. His mansion was initially called Chateau Paterno as it was constructed for Charles Paterno in 1939. The original owner hired Greville Rickard for the job. Two decades later, an art collector called Joseph Hirshhorn bought it to store 6,000 paintings and sculptures from the 19th and 20th centuries. He listed it after hearing the Wall Street Journal call the real estate market “strong.” Now that the fashion designer is moving to Florida, his 13,344 sq. ft. house is up for grabs. It has a guest cottage, a four-bay garage, a greenhouse, and rose gardens. Agents are surprised to hear that it remains unsold.
Michael Jordan’s Chicago Estate – Chicago, Illinois
In 2012, Michael Jordan put up his 56,000 sq. ft. mansion for sale. He asked $29 million for it at first. It is found in Highland Park, Illinois. The athlete has since reduced its price to $15 million in an attempt to sell it off. The NBA legend tried to lure buyers by adding vintage Air Jordan shoes to the deal. According to Chicago Mag, his asking price is too high. No one is looking to buy such a huge place that will only depreciate. Forbes said that the luxury property market is not “limitless.” It has also been pointed out that the fitness features won’t appeal to people without his athleticism. Lastly, The Real Deal said a “culture clash” between realtors over its high-profile nature.
Jennifer Lopez’s Mansion – Los Angeles, California
It feels like Jennifer Lopez’s huge California mansion is perfect for any aspiring pop star. It even has a dressing room you can use to doll up for events. In 2015, the singer put the 17,000 sq. ft. mansion in Hidden Hills for $17 million. The house also comes with nine bedrooms, a recording studio, a gym, a dance studio, and a theater for twenty people. Despite everything, she has zero luck with selling it. She brought the price down to $12.5 million but still no dice. The singer also has properties in New York, Bel Air, and Miami, although she plans to keep those. It is possible that her bad luck has to do with the high property taxes, but this might not be the case. After all, California has lower property taxes than Ohio!

Best known for starring in Rambo and Rocky, Sylvester Stallone bought a La Quinta for $4.5 million in 2010. It has five bathrooms and four-and-a-half bedrooms. Together with her wife Portia De Rossi, Ellen DeGeneres is known to flip and resell luxury homes. They often make a huge profit, but that is not the case with this Los Angeles condo. She put up two condos for sale in 2014. The bigger one sold easily, but the smaller one proved to be a tougher sell. The talk show host put it up for $8 million but kept bringing it down until it reached $5.85 million. That was the same amount that she got it for! Homes.com said that it was “ultra-swanky.”
Joey Lawrence’s Mansion – Encino, California
Best known for starring in Blossom, Joey Lawrence purchased a Spanish mansion in Encino, California, around two decades ago. He first put it up for sale in 2010 at an asking price of $3.2 million. So that you know, he bought it for $1.2 million in 1994. In 2016, he relisted it for $2.249. We are sad to report that his luck has not yet turned around.
Matt Lauer’s Waterfront Estate – The Hamptons, New York
In 2019, NBC anchor Matt Lauer put his waterfront estate up for sale for $65 million. He bought it for $36.8 million from Richard Gere. This is not the only property that the journalist is selling. The estate comes with six bedrooms and seven bathrooms. The difficulty of selling it has to do with the scandals about his career. A real estate company called Corcoran even took it out of the website after word got out in 2017.
Steve Cohen’s Penthouse – New York City, New York
A hedge funder by the name of Steve Cohen has failed to sell his duplex penthouse in Manhattan. In 2013, he put it on the market at an asking price of $115 million. Aside from that, the penthouse comes with five bedrooms and six bathrooms. We are sure that he is not happy about the 50 percent cut. Experts believe that the reason it is still on the market is the high cost of living and property tax.
Forge Mansion – Womelsdorf, Pennsylvania
You can find the Vincent Forge Mansion in East Vincent Township in Pennsylvania. The two-and-a-half stone home was built in 1770. It was initially located on a forge and served as the residence and office of the ironmaster. It continued to operate as a forge all the way up to 1800. It was then converted into a farmhouse and, later, a summer camp for Catholic boys. In the late ‘70s, the place was abandoned. Realtor.com called it “historic” and “charming,” but Facebook sleuths think that the mansion might be haunted. The truth is that ghost stories can affect the sale of your house! We can’t help but wonder why no one has scooped it up just yet. There was a time when it used to be the most expensive home in the nation. Real estate mogul Jeff Greene is now looking for a buyer after buying it for $35 million. In 2017, it went up to $129 million. Whoa.
The Aiken Estate – Savannah, Georgia
This Savannah house was built in 1855. The Aiken Estate boasts five bedrooms, five bathrooms, a private courtyard, and a veranda. It is all yours if you have $1.253 million to spare. This served as the family home of writer Conrad Aiken. Formerly owned by William and Anna Aiken, the house was witness to their unhappy marriage. She tried to have him institutionalized, so you can see that the author did not grow up in a happy home. This might be the reason people are hesitant to buy the historic mansion. We are sure that the rumors of ghosts do not help things either.
Granot Loma – Lake Superior, Michigan
The Granot Loma is a sprawling mansion located off Lake Superior in Michigan. It took the expertise of 400 Scandinavian builders and artisans to bring it to life. It has 23 bedrooms, a private marine, an outbuilding with four apartments, and a hot tub. Granot Loma is on the National Register of Historic Places! The name does not mean anything in particular. Apparently, it was just a mashup of letters from the builder’s wife and children’s names. The developer hired 22 architects to design it and bought pine logs from Oregon for its construction. Once owned by a General Motors co-founder, it was abandoned after the ‘50s. The original asking price for it was $40 million, but it has since gone down to $20 million. Buyers do not seem keen on the age and the remoteness of the huge log cabin.
In 1981, William Bone constructed the Zaca Laderas Ranch or the Neverland Ranch. It is now known as the Sycamore Valley Ranch as well. It spans 2,700 acres of land and has been on the market several times over the years. Most people know it best as the residence of Michael Jackson. There is a wine cellar, a home theater, and an eleven-car garage on the property. It spans 30,000 sq. ft. It is a timelessly elegant house, but the price continues to go down. Richard Kurtz, the developer, said that property taxes are the culprit here. Even though its value has decreased from $60 million to $32.9 million, no one has snapped it up just yet.
Golden Gate Glamour – San Francisco, California

The house went through a total renovation, which means that it is livable. The lack of sale might have to do with the ghosts that allegedly haunt it. They say that a lady and a small child live there!
Ann Starrett Mansion – Port Townsend, Washington
In Port Townsend, you will find this Victorian house that looks like it came from a classic novel. Built-in 1889, it is painted a coral red and located atop a hill. The “Watcher’s” New Jersey Mansion – New Jersey
At first, this home was priced at $1.5 million. The mansion comes with four bathrooms, six bedrooms, and four fireplaces. While there is nothing wrong with it physically, every buyer who moved in made the call to leave it right away. This has to do with a person with far too much time on their hands. There is a villain of sorts that calls themselves the “watcher” of the state. They alleged that their “ancestors” had been the caretaker of the pace in the ‘20s to the ‘60s. This is why the $1.5 million Dutch colonial houses have fared badly on the market. This sounds like the plot of a horror film!
