Most countries, if not all, include protecting the most incredible sights of nature in their list of priorities. For almost 320 million years, England’s oldest formation has stood undisturbed. For many years, it had been a struggle to keep it safe, but a bunch of teenagers has destroyed the landmark. To make things worse, the moment was caught on camera… Not everyone that messes up a landmark intends to do so. Sometimes, it is an honest mistake. At other times, however, a rowdy group decides to make trouble, thinking they will surely get attention if they do this. Either way, things ended poorly for this highly respected, not to mention massive, landmark.
A Blatant Crime
Located in North Yorkshire, the Brimham Rocks are rock formations that were most likely formed during the ice age. Unfortunately, the landmark that has been around for tens of thousand of years was recently vandalized and destroyed by a group of teenagers. So what exactly happened? Was this just some stunt that a bunch of angry hoodlums pulled, or does this blatant crime have a much deeper story behind it?
A Work Of Art
Nature itself created the Brimham Rocks, which is a true work of art. It took more than 320,000,000 years for nature to build these astonishing rock formations, which were sculpted by ice and wind. The stunning landmark have become a top tourist attraction in England. Every year, thousands of tourists visit the site. These rock formations have been around for thousands of years but sadly, even they were not spared from vandalism.
The rocks date back to approximately 320,000,000 years ago, at a time when Yorkshire was only starting to take shape and when water and sand from northern Europe began to create the brand new land. On the other hand, the bizarre shapes of the rock formations that we see today were formed much later, towards the end of the ice age. And, there’s something else which created those weird shapes…
The specific shape of the landmark can’t be found anywhere else in the world. The unique silhouette was carved during the last glacial period, specifically around 73000 BC and even closer to 10000 BC. It is these shapes that attract thousands of visitors to the site each year. Although you might not expect a rock formation to be quite fragile, there is another detail about the Brimham Rocks that you should know.
Waves And Ripples
The multiple waves and ripples on the rocks started forming when the glaciers of the ice age began to melt. Rain and wind also eroded the rock formations and helped create the sculpted looking forms. Since 10000 BC, this amazing landmark has stood the test of time, but it was recently destroyed by men. This makes it look like humans are indeed the biggest threat to Earth. What took nature millions of years to create, mankind ruined within only a few moments.
This shouldn’t come as a surprise, but people from different parts of the world come to England to visit the Brimham Rocks. The strange shapes of the rock formations are truly fascinating. What’s more, being in the presence of a thing that is so old feels majestic. You’d think everyone would be so keen on protecting a really incredible landmark that has such a long history, but that is not the case here.
Something Wasn’t Right
A group of tourists were the first to notice that there was something not right. One of the rocks which once stood on a hill was gone! There are several balancing stones at Brimham Rocks and the missing rock was one of them. Many of the rock formations at the site have actually been named due to their odd shapes. For example, there are formations called the Dancing Bear and the Sphinx.
The rock that you see in this photo has been pushed down. It’s now completely destroyed. Aside from that, the face of the crag where the rock fell from is also damaged. Looking at the photo, you might be wondering how such a massive rock was so easily pushed. It wasn’t easy, but the ones who did it were definitely intent on doing it, and there were more than one of them, which certainly helps.
Pushing The Rock
Locals reported to the Yorkshire police that around 6 p.m., they spotted a group of teenagers pushing the rock. Unfortunately, the teen vandals managed to push off the rock and it was destroyed. They were quick to flee the scene. Authorities are still looking for those responsible for the destruction of the rock. The story doesn’t end here, though. Aside from pushing off the rock, the vandals did something else.
As can be clearly seen in the photo above, the teenagers were able to destroy the massive rock at the historical site. The rock was smashed to pieces as it fell on the crag and hit the ground. There was clearly intent here as it is not easy to move a rock that is several tons heavy. The question now is why these teenagers were so bent on pushing the rock.
It was really dangerous that they pushed off the rock. Just imagine what might have happened if the rock had fallen on top of someone! What’s more, the teenagers also put themselves in danger as they could have fallen off the crag as well or the rock could have fallen on them. It is something that no one should try. Of course, the police got involved. People’s lives were in danger.
As can be expected, the authorities are doing their best to catch the culprits. However, they are still trying to figure out the identity of the teenagers who destroyed the Brimham Rocks. After all, they put lives in danger and destroyed 320 million years of history. There should be punishment for what they did. Even though they are teenagers, they need to learn that actions have consequences, don’t you think so?
Aside from the destruction of the rocks, there were people who also graffitied their names on the rocks. The utter disrespect. Can you believe it? Of course, we are not sure whether the teenagers responsible for the destruction of the rock are also the ones who did but we wouldn’t put it past them. After all, pushing off a huge rock is much more difficult than carving your name on some rock.
Parts of the Brimham Rocks are now ruined because of a bunch of teenagers. It is such a shame that other people will never see those incredible parts the way that nature created them. Now, all that people will see when they visit the site is the remains of what once was nature’s work of art. The good news is the authorities have an idea of who might have done this crime against nature.
No Names Yet
The graffiti tags may say some names, but the police have not found the people who are responsible for the destruction of the rocks. Some might say that the police should have already booked someone for destroying the rocks since there are names carved on sandstone. However, things are not that simple. Perhaps the names are not the names of the culprits but of other people. That scenario is quite possible.
The Yorkshire police believe the suspects must be people that live close to the Brimham Rocks. The idea does make sense because the culprits were able to escape unseen. However, would a local really do such a thing? Most of the time, locals take pride in the local scenery. Do you think it is possible someone from around the area did the crime? Nevertheless, the community’s reaction to seeing this is definitely understandable.
People who live near the Brimham Rocks love the place. Tourists come to their towns because of the landmark and this helps the residents of the town make money. Not only that, locals also love to spend some time at the Brimham Rocks and do some activities there, such as rock climbing and hiking, so it is understandable that they think the rocks’ destruction is infuriating.
Even though there is a name carved on the sandstone, the police cannot just search any local kid who has the same name. It would be better if a witness tells the authorities what they saw. However, it is best if the guilty party confesses to what they did and never does something like it again. Do you think the name on the sandstone is useful information that can point to the teeangers who did this crime?
Putting Everyone In Danger
The Yorkshire police said, “Those responsible also put themselves in danger and have created a potential hazard for other visitors to Brimham Rocks.” It is unlikely that these teenagers considered anyone’s safety when they were messing with the rock. This shouldn’t come as a surprise, though. Acts like this are rarely well thought out and when culprits are caught, there is usually a lot of finger-pointing. As for the police, they had something else to say about this….
Pointless And Needless
The Yorkshire police added, “It might have been fun for some people. Actually, it is just completely pointless and needless.” What do you think? Is this merely a group of teens having fun in their free time, or is it vandalism? Either way, they still destroyed something that took nature at least 10,000 years to create. That should be reason enough for them to feel guilty about what they did. What’s more, their action affected others.
Area Closed Off
Unfortunately, the authorities had to close off the area where the incident occurred since the teenage vandals did not only ruin the rock, they also created a potential hazard for people who might go to that particular site. Both tourists and locals were not allowed. It didn’t take long for what happened at Brimham Rocks to be featured in the news. Also, it made rounds on social media, getting various comments.
Taking To Social Media
When people found about what happened at Brimham Rocks, they took to social media to express their feelings about the incident. Needless to say, nobody was happy about what the teenage vandals did. Many people really wanted the culprits to be found so they could be punished for what they did. Perhaps the teenager vandals thought no one would really care about a bunch of old rocks. They were wrong.
Lack Of Respect
One the comments was made by man named Sean Weldon. He wrote that these teenagers lack respect for others and nature. Another commenter, who is named Chris Meakin, said the culprits may never get caught. What do you think? Will the authorities ever find the persons responsible for this crime? What type of punishment do you think these teenagers should get? For now, these vandals have not been caught but hopefully, this is the last crime they will ever commit.
