He thought it was just a once time occurrence, however, this was the second night in a row that this man was not able to get a good night’s sleep. This was all because he kept hearing really bizarre noises, and he could not work out where they were coming from. After checking for hours around his whole house, eventually, he realized it was coming from somewhere on beneath the driveway. He even got down on his hands and knees to locate where the sounds were coming from. When this man bought this house and moved in, he had no clue that one day he was going to find something as shocking as this.
His New Home
When it comes to the time in your life where you able to buy your own home, it is difficult to tell how the house will depreciate over the years or if anything unexpected will happen. When 37-year old Simon Marks was house hunting, he was certain that he had landed on a bargain. He came across this house in Luton for a terrific price. He quickly grabbed the opportunity, took care of all the paperwork, and transferred the payment as soon as he could. At the moment, it didn’t cross his mind to ask the previous owners why they were in a rush to sell the property.
It Was His First Night
Not too long after he had signed the deal, Simon began organizing his belongings so he could move into his new house. He was overjoyed and so excited about this new chapter of his, especially as the commute to work would now be a lot shorter than before. After spending one full weekend moving his possessions, he was exhausted and fell asleep right away. However, during the night he was unable to sleep, he was now lying awake in the dark hearing the most peculiar noises…
Time To Investigate
He made sure to stay as still as possible, so he could try to make out what he was hearing. Simon heard the sound over and over again- he was sure it was coming from somewhere inside the house. He quietly got up from the bed, peeked out the window, and took a look into the garden. He couldn’t quite make out the source of the noise and nothing appeared to be moving outside. Simon was sure the noise had disappeared which is why he didn’t investigate the rest of the house, so he went back to sleep.
Discovery In The Driveway
The next morning when Simon woke up, he got ready to go to work. He got into his car, a Vauxhall Zafira, and put it into reverse. However, something so weird happened – the car did not go backward but instead the opposite. He tried to reverse once again but still no luck. It felt as if something was caught in one of the wheels. He tried to rev the engine until finally, the car jerked backward. Something still felt off, so he got out of the car to see what was going on.
The Driveway Gave
Simon got down on his knees to get a better look under the car. He eas completely amazed at what he was looking at, the stones of his driveway were cracked and were giving in right before his eyes. He jumped up as he realized the concrete was cracking to pieces. Only then did he fully comprehend what was going on and where the noises were coming from. To the least, he was utterly shocked!
It Should Not Be There
To his knowledge, the house had been built back in the 70s by an elderly couple who lived in the house as well. Be that as it may, what he was seeing in front of him was definitely not part of the plans- he was sure of that. Again, Simon got on to his hands and knees to try and investigate further. As he crawled forward, he knew he needed to dig deeper and get to the bottom of this. How on earth could something makes its way so far down into the ground.
Beneath The Ground
In no time, Simon was able to break down the rest of the driveway. He could now easily see a piece of metal jutting out from the soil. He tried to wipe as much of the dirt off as he could until he was able to get a hold of this unknown object. Simon then put all his strength into it and pulled it as hard as he could. In spite of everything, whatever this object was simply would not budge. He proceeded to dig around it, in the hope of it becoming free. But the more he dug the more he understood that the piece of metal was indeed attached to something else. What exactly could it be?
What Was Hidden There
As Simon continued to dig, the hole continued to get bigger and deeper. He instantaneously began to get extremely worried and with so many thoughts racing through his mind. He immediately thought that this massive whole would soon swallow his car or even worse, his entire house would soon collapse before him. However, he kept going and eventually saw what seemed to be a man-made object. This is when he realized that things were even more frightening than he originally thought. This was the moment he grabbed his phone and called for help.
They Saw An Old Ladder
After calling his father, Gerald rushed to Simon’s house. Despite having no proficient equipment or tools, they still continued to work on the giant hole. As cautious as they could be, they managed to get rid of all the cracked stones and paving that was surrounding the piece of metal. They then spotted a rusty ladder that evidently lowered into complete darkness. This of course made them super anxious. What kind of secret passage had they discovered? Of course, they couldn’t help but wonder where it leads to and what was it doing under Simon’s driveway? It seemed there was only one way to get the answers they were looking for…
They Went Even Deeper
Like any new homeowner, Simon made sure he did all the necessary research before buying the property. But obviously, this had been never been mentioned to Simon before. As far as he understood, before anything was built on the property, it was simply an empty piece of land. How were they ever going to solve this mystery?
The mud was completely thick and heavy that both Simon and Gerald had to carry it away with the help of buckets. As the day soon came to an end, the pile of dirt just kept growing and growing. They were finally able to haul roughly 5 feet of soil, which then have them enough space to use the ladder. It was time to explore what was down here. Were they prepared for what was about to happen?
It Had Hidden Rooms
Simon decided that he would climb down the ladder first, he honestly felt quite frightened as he got halfway done but of course, didn’t want to admit it. However, eventually, he confessed to his dad that he really could not go any further. He was worried for his own safety. He climbed back out and went into his house to get a selfie-stick which he attached to his phone. He plucked up the courage once again and headed back into the hole. On the screen of his phone, Simon actually saw two rooms in this underground tunnel.
The Secret Beneath The House
Simon purchased the property for just half a million bucks. But what he didn’t know was the estate had been used for other reasons, before the house had even been built. It turns out that the elderly couple who sold the house to Simon did not utter one word about the secret lies beneath the house. All in all, the odd noises that Simon had heard the night before was in actual fact the soil falling into one of the hidden rooms.
A Strategic Location
It got to a point where Simon and Gerald decided to stop digging and instead do some research about the property. Once they had checked the plot number they were quickly able to understand what was going on. Before the elderly couple had built and lived in the house, the piece of land was completely empty. However, Gerald noted that the property was in fact located in quite a well-calculated area in town.
Doing Their Research
“My dad saw it and instantly said it’s an air raid shelter,” clarified Simon, “We googled it and found there are quite a few in this area.” They conducted more research, and he found out that it was a shelter made during the Second World War. He explained to the reporters, “The previous owner must have known it was there and when he built the house and put a garden in… he must have filled it in.”
A Man Called Sir John Anderson
At the beginning of the Second World War, in 1938, a man by the name of Sir John Anderson had been given the task to prepare the people for war. Now if you think about it, this was definitely not an easy thing to do. His main job was to come up with a plan that would protect the British citizens from the bombings and attacks. This was the reason that he created a scheme to endure the civilians would be safe.
Building Backyard Shelters
Sir John Anderson, along with a group of engineers, planned and facilitated the development of simple underground shelters. This is why it was important for these bunkers to remain close to the house, so people were able to refuge at any moment. The walls of the structure were built using flexible yet lightweight metal. In total, they had created more than two million bomb shelters similar tot this across the country. But, this was not exactly what Simon had come across.
The Design Was Different
As Gerald took a closer look at the enclosure, he could immediately tell that it was not a bomb shelter designed by Sir John Anderson. But, it was true that the structure had been built sometime around 1938. This was somewhat close to the time of the bombings near Luton. People who had been living in the area were terrified after hearing that the small town had become a target. This is why many of them wanted to assure they would also be safe and protected, no matter what came their way.
A Better Structure
This was when the community decided to get together and summarize a plan to build a communal shelter. All the people who lived in the area were determined to build something strong enough to be able to sustain any air raids. Simon’s dad was so sure that this was not a typical Anderson-style bunker, only because it had two rooms. Additionally, both concrete and bricks were used. But the searching wasn’t over, the deeper they dug, the began to find several artifacts.
This father and son team even discovered a newspaper clipping in one of the rooms. The Herald newspaper was published during the Second World War, and one of the major headlines said, “Luton Airport is this the end?” However, the article spoke about daily life in the middle of a war. The artifact also gave them an opportunity to understand what life was like in Britain during the war. That was not it, they found more…
It Was Made By Hand
The duo also came across some kind of proof that there once was a lot of water and food stockpiled down there. Naturally, people needed a good amount of nourishment if they were going to seek shelter below ground. Who knew how long they were going to be down there, it could’ve been days or weeks on end. When Simon was interviewed, he said, “It’s incredible to think it has all been made by hand.”
The Materials Used
The underground shelter had concrete walls, which were strengthened with cement and bricks. This is what gave it a fender to keep it safe from any air raids that could occur. Despite that Gerald and Simon had made a phenomenal discovery, this was by no means the end. “It’s been a case of dig, dig, dig. We’re about five feet down at the moment so it’s just another five feet to go until it’s finished. I think we’re going to have to get a skip in because there’s so much rubbish to get rid of,” described Simon. Regardless, the duo soon made another extraordinary discovery in the shelter.
That Was Not All
“One of the walls has been bricked up. I’m 90% sure we won’t find out any more rooms but we don’t know. They might have bricked up one of the walls when the house was built to make way for the foundations,” he explained to the reporters. He continued to say, “If that’s the case we’ll just have to leave it.” After some time, this amazing story made rounds on the internet!
The Arrival Of Reporters
As Gerald and Simon kept digging in the area, neighbors and news reporters congregated to the front of the driveway. Everyone wanted to catch a glimpse of this remarkable revelation. But, for Simon, he didn’t really care about the attention. For him, he was more concerned about something else. He certainly didn’t spend all those tedious hours digging just for the fame.
An Incredible Part Of History
Simon was convinced that it was so important for everyone to know about this shelter, so in reality, it had nothing to do with the stardom. He simply felt as if it was his responsibility to shed some light with regards to the history of his country. It felt that it would be a real shame if this part of history was completely forgotten about. Simon was determined to maintain the air-raid shelter for generations to come. But what exactly was his plan?
It Will Not Be Forgotten
Simon and Gerald came up with an idea of how they could look after the shelter. They were really hoping that it could be announced a historical monument. The father-son duo believes things like this should never be neglected simply because it has been several decades since the war ended. They both hoped that future generations will be able to go down into the shelter and learn so much about some of Britains’s important history.
